Dr. Ioannidis studied medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and graduated in 2005. He received his MSC in “Medical Research Methodology” in 2008 from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in “Surgery of Liver, Biliary Tree and Pancreas” from the Democritus University of Thrace in 2016. He received his PhD degree in 2014 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for his thesis “The effect of combined administration of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in ulcerative colitis. Experimental study in rats.” He is a General Surgeon with a special interest in laparoscopic surgery and surgical oncology and also in surgical infections, acute care surgery, nutrition, and ERAS. He has received fellowships for EAES, ESSO, EPC, ESCP, and ACS and has published more than 130 articles with more than 3000 citations.

Ihab is a Registered Nutritionist [Public Health] with significant expertise in planning, implementing and evaluating sustainable nutrition-sensitive intervention programmes at population level. Dr Tewfik has been the Programme Director for Human Nutrition programme for twelve years [since 2007], University of Westminster. He completed his Master and Doctorate in Public Health Nutrition (MPH; DrPH), Nutrition Department, University of Alexandria. He also holds PhD from London South Bank University UK. He is a specialist in global nutritional public health intervention and serves on several editorial boards and as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Food, Nutrition and Public Health – UK. As a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH), Ihab’s international research agenda expanded to nine research projects with UNICEF in aspects of public health nutrition intervention. Nationally, he has carried out three Food Standards Agency (FSA, UK) projects on food safety and one on Biomarkers for predicting breast radiotherapy-induced side- effects funded by the National Cancer Research Institute – UK. Ihab has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals. Ihab has worked as an international consultant to support capacity building for healthcare workforces in developing countries and has participated in training activities in Africa and Asia. He is regularly invited as a keynote speaker on workshops, CPD and short-training courses and he is a key team member in developing global nutritional education programmes to communicate relevant competencies. Ihab is collaborating with many universities in the US [Harvard], UK, EU, and Middle East. Asia and Africa, on aspects related to knowledge exchange and public health nutrition intervention programmes that employ dietary diversification and behavioural modification approaches. Ihab examined the relationship between the obesogenic environment and the health outcomes of young individuals and populations. His work embraces the effects of nutritional exposure during childhood and risk factors for later non-communicable diseases (NCDs) especially in developing countries experiencing economic and nutritional transition. Ihab’s research portfolio includes population interventions to improve opportunities for health during early life, and methods for scaling-up intervention programmes to achieve community-level impact. He has delivered numerous keynote lectures at national and international conferences on the nutrition transition and the rise of obesity, diabetes and NCDs in developing countries. Ihab has been at the forefront of tailoring adequate meals for vulnerable groups via the tailored functional recipes [TFR] concept. Ihab formulated TFR meals/recipes from local food ingredients to modulate complications of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Ihab is the theme leader of “Local Food for Global Health”. The cornerstone strategy of these TFR meals is not limited to the elimination of hunger but extends to the design and engineering of food that exceeds disease prevention by improving the bioavailability of nutrients, increasing biological functions and sustaining health promotion. With various optimised TFR meals (e.g. S- Cool, iAtta and Amtewa), Ihab’s research team has significantly enhanced the school feeding programme in Ghana, improved the quality of life in advanced cancer patients receiving comprehensive palliative care in India and delayed the progression of HIV to AIDS of people living with HIV in Nigeria. These TFR meals transformed medical nutritional therapy protocols by relying on indigenous food ingredients that are locally produced hence considered sustainable, viable alternatives to assure balanced nutritional status among vulnerable populations. The novelty of the TFR concept lies in linking metabolic disease impact, nutritional requirements of the target population and their specific dietary preferences in context to their national food security framework in order to sustain long-term optimum health strategy.

Jekaterina Šteinmiller has an impressive background in clinical, teaching, and research. She is head of Tallinn Health Care College’s working group of applied research, science, and development. Jekaterina is involved in several international organizations. Under her leadership, several healthcare services were developed and implemented, including improving the Quality Bonus System for primary care, and e-consultation services among 16 specialties. Paolo Capodaglio received his M.D. degree from the University of Pavia, Italy, in 1988 and his specialization in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) from the same University in 1991. After graduating, he started working as a PMR specialist in an Institute for clinical care and research (Fondazione Maugeri IRCCS) with clinical and research interests. He devoted most of his research to the functional evaluation in ageing, obesity and metabolic conditions among others (spinal cord injuries, musculoskeletal disorders), published more than 200 papers on peer-reviewed journals and 6 books and is reviewer for several indexed papers.

Brandon Lucke-Wold was born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO. He graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Neuroscience and distinction in honors from Baylor University. He completed his MD/PhD, Master’s in Clinical and Translational Research, and the Global Health Track at West Virginia University School of Medicine. His research focus was on traumatic brain injury, neurosurgical simulation, and stroke. At West Virginia University, he also served as a health coach for the Diabetes Prevention and Management program in Morgantown and Charleston, WV, which significantly improved health outcomes for participants. In addition to his research and public health projects, he is a co-founder of the biotechnology company SwiftScience, the pharmaceutical company ProPhos Neuroscience, and was a science advocate on Capitol Hill through the Washington Fellow’s program. He has also served as president of the WVU chapters for the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Neurosurgery Interest group, and Erlenmeyer Initiative Entrepreneur group. In addition, he has served as vice president for the graduate student neuroscience interest group, Nu Rho Psi Honor Society, and medical students for global health. He was an active member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He is currently Vice President of the UF House Staff Council, Chair of the Quality Improvement Committee, on the Board of Directors for the Alachua County Medical Society, and active member of Institutional Review Committee and Accreditation Requirements Review Committee. He is married to Noelle Lucke-Wold and has two children. As a family, they enjoy running with their dogs, rock climbing, and traveling. In 2004, he became Founder and Head of the Health Telematics Project Group at Fraunhofer Society, Institute of Integrated Circuits, Erlangen, and finally Head of the German National eHealth Competence Center at the University of Regensburg. He is author of more than 450 scientific publications.

Dr. John Pezaris is a graduate of both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology. He is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the Hellenic Society for Neuroscience, and is also a senior member at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Dr. Pezaris is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, and he also currently leads the Visual Prosthesis Laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital. His lab is currently working towards the development of a device-based therapy to remediate total vision loss as a result of diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and optic neuritis, along with vision loss due to eye trauma. In cases where one's eye lacks light sensitivity, the rest of the visual system is often intact and unable to respond to external stimulation. The Visual Prosthesis Laboratory is utilizing the advanced techniques of deep brain stimulation in order to provide an alternative pathway for visual information to enter the brain. They are doing this by implanting electrodes in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus (LGN), and then sending the processed information from eyeglass-mounted digital cameras into the visual pathway after the eyes.

Raffaele Pilla, Pharm.D., Ph.D., Doctor Europaeus, received his Master’s degree in Pharmacy at G. d’Annunzio University in Chieti-Pescara, Italy in 2005, where he also served internships at the Cell Physiology Laboratory and Molecular Biology Laboratory. Prior to his degree, he was an Erasmus Student at Faculté de Pharmacie de Reims in Reims, France. He received his Doctor Europaeus in 2010 from Pitié-Salpétrière Institute in Paris, France. Also in 2010, he received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Physiology, and Pathology of Muscle at G. d’Annunzio University in Chieti-Pescara, Italy. He was hired as a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida in Tampa, on two research grants respectively funded by the Office of Naval Research (US Navy) and Divers’ Alert Network. He has written and lectured widely on his experiences. Dr. Pilla has been involved in ongoing research at the University of South Florida with the use of ketone esters. The initial work, funded by the Office of Naval Research, focused on using ketone esters to prevent CNS oxygen toxicity. Dr. Pilla is working to coordinate efforts in the United States and Italy to expand the ketone ester research to other conditions such as epilepsy and cancer and its use as an alternative metabolic fuel. Dr. Tignanelli is an Acute Care Surgeon at the University of Minnesota providing trauma, emergency surgery, critical care, and ECMO care for critically ill patients. He is triple board-certified in General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Clinical Informatics. His research lab, MNCCORE includes over 30 researchers developing and deploying informatics-based tools to improve the delivery of healthcare within and beyond the University of Minnesota system. His research focuses on the development and validation of machine learning and AI-enabled decision support systems as well as the implementation, user-centered design, and scaling of interoperable clinical decision support tools. Dr. Tignanelli is the current dyad director of the University of Minnesota Center for Outcomes, Quality, Delivery and Evaluation (C-QODE). He is the current co-Director of the Federated Computer Vision in Healthcare U.S. Collaborative and faculty in the UMN Institute for Health Informatics' Natural Language Processing research lab.
